Variations in Religious Thought During the Holocaust: Consideration of God in the Kovno Ghetto Through the Writings of an Elite Orthodox leader, Rabbi Oshry, and the Oral Testimonies of Ordinary Jews, Judith Meisel and Sidney Shachnow

Rola religii żydowskiej w czasie Holokaustu jest złożona w swojej niejednoznaczności. Aby zająć się tym tematem, niniejszy artykuł przedstawi ograniczoną analizę wiary w moc Boga z kontrastujących perspektyw elitarnego przywódcy ortodoksyjnego, rabina Ephraima Oshry'ego i dwóch zwykłych Żydów niebędących członkami elity, Judith Meisel i Sidneya Shachnowa. Wszyscy trzej byli uwięzieni w Getcie w Kownie od 1941 do 1944 roku. Celem rabina Oshry'ego w jego pismach rabinicznych, jako ortodoksyjnej historiografii, było przedstawienie pobożnego jako bohatera, aby utrzymać powojenną wiarę ortodoksów. Gloryfikował religijne przestrzeganie zasad przez Żydów w czasie Holokaustu, w pozornej nieobecności Boga, aby potwierdzić wiarę w moc Boga. Natomiast ustne świadectwa Meisela i Shachnowa ujawniają ich osobistą udrękę, gdy opisują swoje indywidualne wątpliwości co do mocy Boga. Wyjaśniają, że zastanawiali się, dlaczego Bóg nie działał, aby powstrzymać zniszczenie i rzeź.
